  1. TOO CLOSE

From the recording COUNTERBALANCE

“There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.” Laurell K. Hamilton
Which is worse: physical trauma or psychological? Ask the soldiers returning from fruitless wars. The luckier amongst them can be cured of the wounds to their bodies within months. But the mental scars rarely fade in a lifetime. Depression and mental illnesses affect one in ten people and if left untreated, have the power to destroy what might otherwise be a bright future overflowing with strong relationships and positive experiences. This song paints a picture of one person’s experience of depression at a young age and of the intensity of emotions that can leave the first-time sufferer frightened and alone, terrified of what might happen to them.

Lyrics

TOO CLOSE

When we’re too close
All we see and feel just pixelates
We see only shades
Red green blue, I make no sense of you
If I don’t pan away

Sometimes it takes one step back or two
To reset thought, till it all comes clear
But we pore over past cold war
For joy that never was

Now we’re older, did we learn
Calm sophistication, or forget?

And there they lay
The roots of thought in rings
The final groove, circling without end
Loops of black replaying back to back
That never fade away

Now we’re older…
